After Direct Entry Scheme and RMAS  Iain Macdonald joined 15 PARA as 2Lt in 1981. He was attached to Depot Para in 1982 prior to an SSVC posting to 2 PARA as Pl Comd undertaking an op tour of Belize in 1983.

Returning to 15 PARA in 1984 as Captain he commanded the Recce Platoon on various NATO exercises, attended Coy Comd Course at Warminster, gained US Wings with 82nd AB Division in Vicenza 1987 and commanded C Company on promotion to Major.

He joined 10 PARA in 1989, commanded 4 Company (who won the Courage Trophy) and attended TASC Camberley. In 1991 he undertook an op tour in Northern Ireland initially with HQ 8 Bde Londonderry and subsequently 1 PARA in Belfast.

He was promoted Lt Col in 1993 assuming command of 2 Bde STT Shorncliff until 1995.
