Howard Raymond Whalley was the son of Elias Andrew and Constance Emily (Walsh) Whalley, of Wembley Park, Middlesex. Howard was a clerk to a paper Merchant and enlisted in 1939 and was granted a commission in the Devonshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Whalley successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Lt Whalley was killed in action on 2 April 1945, aged 24, and was given a field burial at Lengerich, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 28 April 1947.
