Herbert William Reffold enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment, transferred to The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Reffold attended parachute course 15 at RAF Ringway on 8 to 16 June 1942. He was posted to the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment.
Pte Reffold was killed on 11 November 1942, aged 29, on route to North Africa on Operation Torch.
He is buried in the Gibraltar (North Front) Cemetery, and also commemorated on the Elstead Surrey village war memorial.
