Herbert John Baxter was the son of Percy and Abigail Baxter and the husband of Agnes Baxter, of Newport, Monmouthshire. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Battery Sergeant Major Baxter, successfully completed glider training and was posted to HQ Troop, 2 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
BSM Baxter was killed in action in the Johannahoeve area on 20 September 1944, aged 32. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
