Herbert Davis was the son of John and Elizabeth Davis, of Bradford, Yorkshire. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Driver Davis successfully completed Air Despatcher training and was posted to 223 Air Despatch Company, Royal Army Service Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Dvr Davis died of injuries sustained on 19 September 1944, aged 38, when Dakota KG-401, piloted by F/O Pattee, made an emergency landing on a field along Vogelzangstraat in Kessel/Lier, Belgium. He was buried in the Ath (Lorette) General Cemetery.
