Herbert Charles Noel Barnewall Radcliff was the son of John Travers and the Honourable Ivy Esmay Myee Barnewall Radcliff, of Cape Town, South Africa. He was granted a commission and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lieutenant Radcliff successfully completed his parachute training and was posted as Officer Commanding, Medium Machine Gun Platoon, Support Company, 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Lt Radcliff was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 21, and was given a field burial north of the railway crossing alongside Wolfhezerweg, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
