Harry Child, son of Fred and Annie Child, of Radcliffe, Lancashire, enlisted into the Lancashire Fusiliers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Child successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway and was posted to The 11th Parachute Battalion. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Child was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 24. He was killed by a shell that hit his position in a farm building whilst he was defending 3rd Battery Light Regiment, Royal Artillery, in the vicinity of the Old Church. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial.
