Gordon Stuart Murray was the son of David and Violet Murray, of Inverkeithing, Fife. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Murray successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 103 on 15 to 28 February 1944. His course report stated “Good performer, qualities of leadership, high morale”. He was posted to 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
L/Cpl Murray died of wounds on 21 September 1944, aged 21, in the Arnhem Municipal Hospital and was given a field burial in the grounds by the Reverends Daniel McGowan and Alan Buchanan. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 1 November 1945.
