Driver George Woodcock

27 Feb 1945

George Woodcock was the son of George and Alice Woodcock and the husband of Evelyn Woodcock. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Driver Woodcock successfully completed Air Despatcher training and was posted to 799 Air Despatch Company, Royal Army Service Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Drv Woodcock was one of four Air Despatchers in RAF 233 Squadron Dakota KG-399, base Blakehill Farm. The aircraft was hit by Flak after having dropped supplies near Arnhem, and crashed just across the Dutch-Belgian border near a gunpowder factory in the municipality of Arendonk. The Air Despatchers were captured and sent to Stalag XIIA where Dvr Woodcok died on 27 February 1945, aged 35, during an Allied bombing raid. (Roll of Honour, 5th Revised Edition, 2011). He was originally buried in Leipzig East Cemetery and re-interred to Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery on 24 May 1947.
