George Wilson, son of Joseph and Hettie Wilson, of Haslingden, Lancashire, enlisted into the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Wilson successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to D Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Wilson was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 22. He was originally given a field burial but was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery as an unknown British soldier. Recent research has identified his grave and a new headstone bearing his details was dedicated at a ceremony in September 2016.
