George Johnson was the son of Herbert and Hannah Maria (Brammer) Johnson, of Normacot, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Johnson successfully completed parachute training on course number 21/22 and was posted to C Company, 3 Para. He went on a refresher course number 108 from 20 to 29 March 1944 with 9 Para. His course report stated “Very good and confident performer”. He was posted to C Company, 3 Para and took part in Operations Torch (North Africa) and Overlord (Normandy Landings). En route to North Africa on 16 November 1942 they were forced to land in Portugal.
His brother Rupert served in HMS Fidelity a Royal Navy ‘Q’ ship and was killed on 1 January 1943, aged 19, when the ship was hit by a torpedo fired from U 453. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
Pte Johnson was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 24, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
