George Sandle enlisted into the Royal Artillery before volunteering for airborne forces during World War II.
He qualified as a military parachutist after attending course 85 which ran at RAF Ringway from 29 September to 10 October 1943. The course cadre comprised of 219 trainees, 190 of these qualified including George.
After qualifiying as a parachutist George was initially posted to the Holding Wing and later transferred to the 8th Parachute Battalion, serving with No 9 Platoon C Company.
He parachuted into Normandy with the Battalion which was tasked to destroy bridges across the Dives river to protect the Normandy bridgehead.
George Sandle died in February 2011.
