Private George Hinchcliffe began his service with 2nd/4th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment.
In July 1943, he took part in Parachute Course 72 (the main 'conversion' course for 2nd/4th Bn, South Lancs to become a Parachute Battalion) and passed with the comments 'Worked hard. Proved himself fairly capable'. After completion of the course he joined the ranks of the newly formed 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion.
Records indicate his involvement in the parachute assault to Normandy on 6 June 1944, and service throughout the Battalion actions during the Normandy campaign. Pte Hinchcliffe was killed, among 9 other members of the Battalion, during an unsuccessful attempt to capture Pont L'Eveque in late August - part of the Normandy break-out.
Private George Hincliffe died on 23 August 1944, aged 21 years old. He is now buried in Pont L'Eveque (Route de Caen) Communal Cemetery, Normandy.
