George Edgar Matson was the son of George and Mary Matson and the husband of Annie Matson, of Aycliffe. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal Matson successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 34. The course lasted from 12 to 27 October 1942. He was posted to R Company, 3 Platoon, 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Slapstick (Italy) and Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Cpl Matson was killed in action on 17/18 September 1944, aged 29, and was given a field burial in a mass grave in the Temporary Military Cemetery near Ginkel Heath, beside Verlengde Arnhemseweg, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 15 August 1945.
