Lance Corporal Frederick Ward joined the airborne forces towards the end of the Second World War.
He qualified as a military parachutist on course 109 which ran at RAF Ringway from 27 March 1944 to 7 April 1944 and served with D Troop in 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron.
After a frustrating summer of cancelled operations the Squadron was deployed in Operation Market Garden, as part of 1st Airborne Division's assault to take the Rhine crossings at Arnhem.
L/Cpl Ward was wounded during the fighting and subsequently taken prisoner of war. He was repatriated back to the UK in 1945 when the camp was liberated at the end of the war.
