Frank William Howard was the fifth of six children of John (Jack) Alfred and Ada Alice (Fitzjohn) Howard, of East London. His father, John died in 1928, leaving his mother to raise the children alone. He enlisted in the General Service Corps, and volunteered for Airborne Forces.
Corporal Howard successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringwood, on course number B 142, and was posted to 6th Airborne Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of Signals, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Cpl Howard was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 21, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 26 March 1947.
