Frank Bates was the son of Walter and Alice Bates, of Staffordshire. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Bates successfully completed his glider training and was posted to B Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden, Arnhem.
Pte Bates was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 25, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing, panel 5.
