Sapper Ernest Edward 'Ernie' Chaney volunteered for airborne forces in 1942 and qualified as a military parachutist on Course 31 which ran at RAF Ringway from 8 to 18 October.
He subsequently served with B Troop, 1st Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers, and took part in the North African campaign.
Later, in Operation Fustian, he jumped as No 12 in Lt Peter Stainforth's stick for the Sicily landings and also served with the Squadron in Italy.
