Ernest Cooper, son of George and Mary Cooper, of Sheffield, enlisted into the West Yorkshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Cooper successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course 108 from 20 to 29 March 1944. He was posted to A Company, 156 Parachute Battalion. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Cooper was reported to have been killed by a mortar bomb in a trench on 25 September 1944, aged 31. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial.
