Eric H Manton joined the Army 24 June 1930. He served with The Royal Artillery before volunteering for the airborne forces.
He was initially jump trained in 1940/41, then later successfully completed Course 3 Advanced at RAF Ringway. This course ran between 21 and 29 January 1942. 234 men were trained on this course but unfortunately it had a high rate of sickness and refusals which meant that 22 men did not complete this training.
Whilst serving in operation in N.Africa with The 1st Parachute Bn, Eric was 'wounded in action'. He suffered multiple splinter injuries to his eyes and legs.
He was discharged from the Army 10 October 1943.
