Corporal Edward James Burgess was the son of William and Clara Burgess, and the husband of Nellie Burgess, of Cherry Tree, Blackburn, Lancashire.
Edward was successfully jump trained at RAF Ringway on Course 88. This course ran between 18 and 30 October 1943.His instructor noted this about his performance on the course:
"Slow to learn but finished course satisfactorily"
He then served with 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Battalion and took part in the D-Day landings to Normandy, during Op Overlord on 5-6 June 1944.
Corporal Burgess died on 6 June 1944, aged 27 years old. He is now buried at Herouvillette New Communal Cemetery, Herouvillette, near Caen, Normandy.
