Private Edmund T Yates

{ Ted }

Edmund ‘Ted’ Yates enlisted on the 20 January 1936 and was serving with the 14th Machine Gun Training Company, The Middlesex Regiment when he volunteered for Airborne Forces. [1]

His Basic Parachute Course is not recorded, but very likely to be September/October 1941, followed by No 1 Advanced Course, at RAF Ringway, 4 – 11 January 1942. [2]

‘Ted’ Yates served in the 1st Parachute Battalion from 1941 to 1946.

He took part in the parachute operation at Beja, in North Africa, 16 November 1942, where he served in No 2 Section, 5 Platoon, ‘S’ Company.

He was injured later on, and remained in North Africa on Rear Party, during Operation ‘Slapstick’, the landings at Taranto in Italy in September 1943.

On return to England he was posted to the Quartermaster's Department, as a Storeman, and worked with the RQMS and was on the Seaborne Echelon to France, August – September 1944.

He was discharged to the Z/T Reserve on the 12 March 1946. [1]
