Donald William Stewart DCM, was the son of Captain John Alexander and Vera Stewart, of Harrow, Middlesex. He enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Signalman Stewart successfully completed his parachute training and was posted to 1st Airborne Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of Signals. He took part in the Italian Campaign and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (London Gazette 20 April 1944). He also took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sigmn Stewart was hit by sniper fire near the Hartenstein Hotel and died of his wounds on 24 September 1944, aged 21. He was given a field burial in the grounds of the Elisabeth Hotel, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 30 January 1946.
