Private Collier then volunteered for airborne forces and undertook parachute training course number 86 at RAF Ringway between 4 and 19 October 1943. His course report stated: 'hard working, shows no signs of nervousness.’

After initially being posted to the Holding Wing, Pte Collier went to 195 Airlanding Field Ambulance RAMC.

At some point he was posted to 156 Parachute Battalion and went with them on Operation Market Garden. Pte Collier was made a Prisoner of War at Arnhem.
