Denis Goulding of Temple Sowerby, Penrith, Cumbria enlisted into the Territorial Army in April 1939 prior to the outbreak of The Second World War.
He was posted to The Border Regiment, and then volunteered for the 1st Battalion The Border Regiment which part of the British 1st Airborne Division.
He serviced in North Africa and took part in the invasion of Sicily and Italy in 1943. He returned to England with his unit and was billeted in Lincolnshire, in preparation for what they thought was an invasion of Europe.
War Substantive Sergeant (W/Sgt) Goulding went on Operation Market Garden as Platoon Sgt of 22 Platoon D Company. He was wounded in the knee on 21 September 1944 and taken a Prisoner of War. He was sent to Stalag VB in Villingen, Gemany and Stalag VIIA at Moosburg, Germany.
After the war Denis had a successful career as an agricultural auctioneer. He married in 1948 and had two daughters.
