David Raymond Luke was the son of David John and Annie Jane Luke, of Penrhiwceiber, Glamorgan, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Luke successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 73, from 19 to 28 July 1943. His course report stated “Quiet and reserved but hard working, satisfactory jumper". He was posted to Royal Army Medical corps and attached to 8th Battalion the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Pte Luke died of wounds on 7 June 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial at Ranville Le Mesnil and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France on 14 August 1945.
