David Lewis was enlisted in The General Service Corps on 2 March 1943 and transferred to 34th Signal Training Regiment on 25 May 1943.
He was later posted to 56 (Highland) Medium Regiment Royal Artillery on 1 November 1943 and joined 53rd Airlanding Light Regiment on 1 February 1944, serving with 212 Battery, which took part in the Normandy campaign in 1944.
