David Essex Lewis was the son of Harold Essex and Betty Essex Lewis, of Clifton Down, Bristol. He was granted a commission in the Devonshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Lewis successfully completed glider training and was assigned to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Lt Lewis was killed in action on 2 July 1944, aged 21, and was given a field burial near Bavent and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 4 October 1945.
