Crofton Edmund Peter Sankey was the son of Lt. Gen. Crofton Sankey D.S.O. and Elizabeth Sankey. He was commissioned in the Royal Engineers, and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Sankey successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 42, on 14 to 25 December 1942, and was posted to 1st Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers, attached to H.Q. 1st Airborne Division. He took part in Operations in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Sankey was killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 21, and was given a field burial in in the garden of the Berghege family, Utrechtseweg, opposite Annastraat, Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 10 September 1945.
