One of many Irish volunteers, his older brother Seamus was already fighting for the Crown. Christopher Fitzsimons, a serving Irish soldier, deserted the Irish Army in Dublin 17/4/1943. Walking to a Belfast recruiting office, he arrived during a British bank holiday weekend, he was forced to return to his unit in Dublin and return the following weekend. This time the office was open and here he volunteered for The British Army. His elder brother was already a member of the Royal Artillery so he joined as well. Seamus had by now joined the Parachute regiment so on 29/11/43 Private Fitzsimons too volunteered for airborne forces and joined 156 Btn serving with them at Arnhem.
Pte Fitzsimons joined 12 Para after "Market Garden". 156 Btn it seemed, had been disbanded due to attrition.
The picture shows the 156 "Bush hat".
