Charles William Greenslade, the son of John and Nora Greenslade and husband of T J Greenslade, of Exmouth, Devon, enlisted in the Welch Regiment and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal Greenslade undertook parachute training on No 23 Training Course at RAF Ringway, which ran from 17 to 23 August 1942, he was posted to the 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion.
He took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Cpl Greenslade.
Cpl Greenslade died at sea on 10 September 1943, aged 26.
He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
