Corporal Charles Eric Metcalfe, born in Yorkshire, was the son of Charles Douglas Metcalfe and of Ida Metcalfe (nee Nelson).
He volunteered for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on Course 88 which ran at RAF Ringway from 18 to 30 October 1943. The course instructors’ notes record that he worked hard and that his performance was consistently good.
Cpl Metcalfe was posted to 7th (Light Infantry) Battalion, and served with No 4 Platoon, B Company.
He parachuted into Normandy in the early hours of 6 June 1944 and was killed a few days later by sustained enemy shellfire on B Coy positions at Le Hom.
Cpl Charles Metcalfe died on 10 June 1944, aged 23 years, and is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
