Cecil Stead was born in Yorkshire and lived in Halifax.
He enlisted in The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (West Riding) and volunteered for airborne forces. Lance Corporal Stead successfully completed his parachute training and was posted to 156 Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
L/Cpl Stead was killed in action on 21 September 1944, aged 26, and was given a field burial 40 yards north east of the Bildersberg hotel, and was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 7 February 1946.
