Private Bernard Hibbert

Bernard Hibbert started his military career on November 2nd, 1945 with the General Service Corps before moving onto the Camerons in October 1946.  Originally stationed at Abingdon he completed various deployments at the Cameron Barracks in Eastern Inverness as well as several, other locations.

It was during his time with the Camerons that he took his first overseas deployment as part of the CMF (Central Mediterranean Force) in Italy.  Stationed in Trieste, he added skiing to his repertoire of skills which he often recalled favourably during the few times he regaled us with his military stories. His unit participated in the process of returning prisoners of war to Tito’s Yugoslavia as the Mediterranean campaign wound down.  

It was on 5 April 1948 that upon successful competition of parachute training, he joined 2nd Battalion The Parachute regiment. It was with 2 PARA  that he took a second overseas deployment in the BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) in August 1948, spending just over a year before returning home in 1949. 

On the 7 April 1953 he transferred out of active duty service to the Reserves where he served another 4 years and 271 days, completing his twelve  years of service.
