Private Bernard B Airey Bernard Burwell Airey was born on July 21, 1919 as the son of Clarence and May Airey. In the 1939 register he is shown as a 19-year-old clerk for a sugar manufacturer, living with his parents at 8 Millfield Avenue, York, United Kingdom.
He volunteered for the airborne forces from The Lancashire Regiment and after passing parachute jump training at Karbrit, served with 11th Parachute Battalion, 'C' Company, 7th Platoon, and participated in the Battle of Arnhem, during Operation Market Garden. He was killed in action on September 21, 1944, aged 25.
As his body was never found, he is now commemorated on panel 8, the Memorial at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Nijmegen.
