Benjamin David Rothwell was the son of the Revd. Frederick Rothwell and Bertha Mabel (Hill) Rothwell, of East Harptree, Somerset, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Rothwell successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and was posted to 6th (Airborne) Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
L/Cpl Rothwell was killed in action on 24 March 1945, age 21, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 28 March 1947.
