Arthur Derek Lind Sharples was the son of Arthur and Natalie Sharples, of Ealing, Middlesex. He was commissioned in the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort’s Own) and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lieutenant Sharples successfully completed his glider training and was posted to Support Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Lt Sharples died of wounds, aged 23, on 21 September 1944 and was buried by the Reverends Daniel McGowan and Alan Buchanan in the grounds of the Municipal Hospital at Arnhem. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 22 August 1945.
