Anthony Thornton Wilkinson B.A. (Oxon), was the son of William Thornton and Evelyn Sybil Wilkinson (Ward); husband of Marcia Wilkinson, of Camberley, Surrey. He was commissioned in the Northumberland Hussars and volunteered for airborne forces.
Captain Wilkinson successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 51, from 15 to 27 February 1943. His course report stated “Not so good at start, but improved to be competent. Sound cheerful leader”. He was posted to HQ 3rd Battalion, Defence Platoon, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Capt Wilkinson was killed in action on 8 June 1944, aged 24, and was given a field burial at Breville and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 2 July 1945.
