Anthony Michael Gordon son of Robert and Pauline Granichstadten and husband of Susanne Elizabeth Gordon enlisted into the Royal Pioneer Corps before volunteering for airborne forces in 1944.
Private Gordon qualified as a military parachutist on Course 102 which ran at RAF Ringway from 7 to 18 February 1944. The course instructors' notes recorded ‘Pte Gordon, Keen, confident, reliable’
He was posted to Headquarter platoon of 5th Parachute Brigade.
Pte Gordon saw active service in Normandy, the Ardennes and was killed in action on the first day of Operation Varsity. He died aged 26 on 24 March 1944 and is now buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, at Kleve, Germany.
