Alexander John Tisshaw was the son of Charles and Florence Tisshaw and the husband of Marjorie Tisshaw, of Chingford, Essex. He was granted a commission in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Flight Lieutenant Tisshaw was a member of 6341 Light Warning Unit, Radar Detachment, Royal Air Force, he was given some glider training and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
F/Lt Tisshaw and five other members of 6341 Light Warning Unit were on a Horsa glider, Chalk number 5003, with their equipment, when they were hit by Flak and crashed south of Opheusden alongside the road to Dodewaard. There were no survivors. In addition to the two pilots, the other occupants who died were Fl Lt John Tisshaw; LACs John Anderson, James Brook, Edwin Lascelles; ACs Harold Highton and John Swann, all of the RAF. All eight men were given a field burial near the crash site. Alexander Tisshaw died on 18 September 1944, aged 28, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 21 September 1945.
