Alan Ward was the son of Harry and Amy Ward; husband of Winifred Ward, of Essex, he enlisted in the Essex Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Ward successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 47, from 18 January to 1 February 1943. His course report stated “Good man. Made some very good descents – always a cheerful worker”. He was posted to Signals Platoon, 9th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
L/Cpl Ward was killed in action on 19 August 1944, aged 24, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
