Alan John Walton served with 3 PARA.
He developed encephalitis, an acute inflammation of the brain, while serving at St Andrew’s Barracks, Paceville, Malta .
Pte Walton was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital, Bighi, on 18 January but sadly died at 10:40 hours on 22 January 1969.
He is now buried at Pembroke Military Cemetery, Malta.
On 3 December 2012 a new headstone more in keeping with his service was erected on his grave, replacing a headstone with an incorrect inscription.
A service of dedication was held at 11:00 hrs on Friday 12 April 2013 at Pembroke Cemetery for the new headstone on the grave of Pte Walton. The ceremony was attended by 2 and 3 PARA veterans, some of whom are now residents of Malta. 3 PARA was represented by its Adjutant, Captain Paul Billings. They were joined by Lt Col Borg, representative of Air Forces Malta, Cannon Simon Godfrey of St Paul's Cathedral, Malta. Two buglers from Air Forces Malta performed at the ceremony.
