W N Hill served in the Royal Artillery prior to volunteering for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on course 66, which ran at RAF Ringway from 24 May to 4 June 1943.
He subsequently served in the Mortar Platoon, Support Company, 3rd Parachute Battalion and fought at the Battle of Arnhem where he was wounded in action and held as a Prisoner of War.
