Ray Edwards passed through The Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces Depot in 1955 and was posted to 2 PARA into Michael Gray's Platoon.

He served in the Cyprus Emergency, Bahrain, Emirates, Hong Kong, Singapore, Borneo campaign and Northern Ireland.

His regular army service was split by four years on A Reserve from 1958 to 1962, when he rejoined 2 PARA.

Ray's last posting prior to discharge in 1970 was at Brecon School of Infantry.

Borneo (Kalimantan to the Indonesians) is the second biggest island in the world. One third of the island was three British dependant territories – Sarawak, the Sultanate of Brunei and North Borneo.

Cyprus (EOKA Campaign)

A continual round of village cordon and search operations, road blocks, curfews, law enforcement and riot control followed. Operations were directed against terrorist enclaves in the Kyrenian and Troodos Mountains and the Paphos Forest.

A brief honeymoon as peace keepers between two warring communities locked in civil unrest descended into a virtual civil war between Republican IRA and Protestant para-military groups during the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’ that were to last 37 years.
