Leslie Mumford was born in 1923, the son of Thomas and Ellen Mumford, of Leicester. He originally enlisted in The Rifle Brigade and then in 1942 he volunteered for Airborne Forces and was posted to the 1st Airlanding Reconnaissance Squadron.
Leslie was assigned to ‘A’ Troop and with them he went to North Africa in May 1943. It is not known if he took part in the Squadron’s operations in Italy in September 1943. In December 1943 he returned with the Squadron to the UK.
He was one of those that volunteered to undergo parachute training and was sent on parachute course 109, at RAF Ringway, 27 March to 7 April 1944. This was the first Recce Squadron group of four officers and forty men. His parachute instructors comments: Quiet, hard working. A good jumper.
He was accidentally shot and killed whilst out with ‘A’ Troop on a training exercise on the 20 June 1944. He was 21 years old.
He was buried at Leicester (Gilroes) Cemetery, Section UU, Grave 233 on the 24 June 1944.
