Driver Lawrence Alfred Clift was the son of James William and Elizabeth Clift, of Carlton, Nottingham, and husband of Phyllis Irene Clift, also of Carlton. He initially served with 19 Beach Signals, Royal Corps of Signals and took part in the operations in Normandy following D-Day in mid-1944. Records indicate he transferred, as Driver to Lt Mutch, to 6th Airborne Divisional Signals.
In late July, he was driving with the CO, Lt Col Smallman-Tew to Brigade Signal Section (K) at Le Mesnil, by airborne jeep. Lt Col Smallman-Tew, Lt Mutch and Dvr Clift were killed when a German mortar shell hit their vehicle near Escoville.
Driver Clift died on 22 July 1944, aged 26 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
