Private William Prince was the son of Charles and Nellie Prince, of Salford, Lancashire; and husband of Ethel Prince, of Higher Broughton, Salford. He originally enlisted into the Royal Artillery and later volunteered for airborne forces.
He attended Parachute Training Course No 88 at RAF Ringway which ran from 18 to 30 October 1943. The course was attended by 268 trainees who completed 1921 descents. The instructors noted Pte Prince as "conscientious and reliable".
On completion of his training he was posted to the 13th Parachute Battalion. He jumped with the Battalion as part of Operation Overlord, and fought in the Normandy campaign.
Pte Prince died on 12 June 1944, aged 29 years and is buried at Hermanville War Cemetery, Normandy.
