William Chesney Murray, of Deepdale, Preston, Lancashire, enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Murray successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 88 from 18 to 30 October 1943. His course report stated “Keen, hard worker, made good progress”. He was posted to 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion, and took part in the Ardennes campaign.
Pte Murray died of wounds on 3 January 1945, aged 25. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
