Sergeant Frederick A Drew

Frederick Allen Drew was the son of Charles Thomas and Edith (Corbett) Drew, of Wolverhampton, he enlisted in The King’s Shropshire Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.

His father was killed in action on 28 September 1916, aged 24, during the battle of the Somme, whilst serving with the 7th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment.

Sergeant Drew successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 132 from 4 to 14 September 1944. His course report stated “Above average – very confident”. He was posted to 13th (2/4th Battalion the South Lancashire Regiment) Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Sgt Drew was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 33, whilst taking part in the daylight parachute drop into Germany as part of the Rhine Crossing during operation Varsity and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 13 November 1946.
