Private Harold William Boyes, son of Alfred C Boyes and Hilda W Boyes, of Marfleet, Hull, served with 13th (South Lancs) Parachute Battalion. He took part in the Rhine Crossing, during Op Varsity.
Harold was jump trained at RAF Ringway on Course 96. This course ran between 16 and 30 December 1943. This course consisted of 8 descents from both balloons and aircraft. His jump instructor noted this about his performance on the course:
"Not outstanding qualities, but worked hard"
Private Boyes died on 24 March 1945, aged 23 years old. He is now commemorated on the Memorial at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Nijmegen.
Many of the other soldiers commemorated here died in the 1st Airborne fighting around Arnhem the previous Autumn.
